    Topic of Study
The "Roaring 20's," along with the "Jazz Age" and the "Harlem Renaissance," is a commonly used term that refers to the 1920's in America. Following the shock and chaos of World War I, American society enjoyed unprecedented levels of prosperity during this time as the economy soared. At the same time, Prohibition, the ban on the sale and manufacture of alcohol, made millionaires out of bootleggers and led to an increase in organized crime. Normalcy was finally returned to politics, jazz music was highlighted, flappers redefined womanhood, automobiles production increased drastically, and sound pictures and the radio took over entertainment. The era was further distinguished by several inventions and discoveries of far-reaching importance, unprecedented industrial growth and accelerated consumer demand and aspirations, and significant changes in lifestyle.

    ...
Twentieth-century history is approached here from a social and cultural perspective, as well as from the more traditional political and economic views. Contributions of racial minorities, Native Americans, women and non-traditional religions are given a close look. Crafton departs from revisionist accounts that stress the systematic development of film, and portrays the transition to sound as partly rational and partly confused.
